One of the most important and most famous Ekadashis of all is Dev Uthani Ekadashi. According to the Hindu calendar , Dev Uthani Ekadashi comes on the 11 th day of the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of the Hindu month, Karthik. Prabodhini Ekadashi is another name of Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi marks the end of Chaturmas (period of four months from Devshayani to Dev Uthani Ekadashi). The four months here refer to the resting time of Lord Vishnu . Lord Vishnu goes rest on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi , which comes four months prior to Dev Uthani Ekadashi. As per beliefs, one is able to attain the blessings of Lord Vishnu to the fullest, during this period. The auspiciousness of performing any task increases, when Lord Vishnu wakes up from a long sleep of four months.

Once Goddess Lakshmi was very upset, regarding the irregular schedule of Lord Vishnu. He used to sleep at odd timings, which became a reason of problem for other gods and followers of Vishnu. Maa Lakshmi told Lord Vishnu about this problem and asked him to find out a solution. She told him that because of his irregular schedule, Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva never get to meet him, in spite of some important work.

Lord Vishnu promised Goddess Laxmi that he will find an appropriate solution for the same. At the very moment, the gods and saints came to Lord Vishnu and informed him about the theft of Vedas by a demon named, Sankhyayan. They asked for help and informed him that Sankhyayan has started spreading Adharma (injustice) all around the world.

Lord Vishnu took the responsibility of getting back the Vedas from the demon, Sankhyayan. After a long fight of three days, Lord Vishnu got the Vedas back and gave them to other saints and gods.

After that long fight, Lord Vishnu was tired and wanted to sleep. There and then, he came up with the solution of his problem of irregular sleeping and informed Goddess Lakshmi about the same. He decided that he would fix four months of the year for regular sleep and would work during rest of the months. Goddess Laxmi accepted the decision and this became the solution for their problem.

These four months of his sleep are collectively known as ‘Chaturmas’, the duration between Dev Shayani Ekadashi and Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi: Importance
