Legends behind celebration of Durga Puja or Durgotsav

Let’s know the legends associated to Durga Puja. according to our Scriptures, there are two legends behind celebrating this festival...

Durga Puja and Mahishasura

Mahishasura was a buffalo headed demon who successfully gained the boon from Lord Shiva after a long and hard penance. Lord Shiva blessed him that no man or deity or beast would be able to kill him. This boon made him more cruel and brutal towards the people.

To eliminate his terror from the earth, the trinity came together and merged their powers. This action resulted in the birth of a powerful Goddess Durga. It was the 10th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin, when Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura and established peace on earth. This day is also celebrated as Vijayadashami, Dasara or Dussehra in other parts of India.

Durga Puja and Lord Rama

Lord Rama was the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. During the exile, Maa Sita (consort of Lord Rama) was abducted by Ravana. Lord Rama along with this brother Lakshman and his devotee Hanuman set to Lanka. He was accompanied by Vanar sena. Legend says that when the battle within Lord Rama and Ravana was going on, Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga till 9 days. And on 10th day, Lord Rama won the battle and killed Ravana.
