Guru Purnima is also known as Ashadh Purnima because it comes in the month of Ashadh. At just next day of Ashadh Purnima the Hindi month Shravan begins which symbolizes arrival of rainy days. Ashadh Purnima reminds people about the coming pleasant showery days. Guru purnima 2012 will be celebrated on 3rd July. Why and how people celebrate Guru Poornima?

As per some Hindu beliefs, Guru Purnima is celebrated to commemorate the birth of ancient sage Ved Vyas and his gifted knowledge. Maha Rishi Ved Vyas gifted ocean of Vidhya to mankind. Four Vedas Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda, and Adharveda were brought by Rishi Vyas and written by Lord Ganesha. The great epics Shirmad Bhagwad Gita and Mahabharata were also authored by ancient sage Vyas. Thus, it is believed that in memory of Maha Rishi Vyas Guru Purnima is celebrated.

Guru Purnima is a golden day to enhance wisdom. This auspicious day increases aura of wisdom and knowledge. On the propitious day of Guru Purnima, one can acquire unfathomable vidhya, can invite blessed vibes, and can immerse into the pious thoughts. It is believed that without a good teacher no person can see clarity in path of life. In ancient times, people used to give infinite respect to their mentors. Even children of kings at childhood were sent in Ashrama for accomplishing literacy under profound guidelines of Guru which revealed the beautiful ‘Guru-Shishya’ traditions. In contemporary time also, ‘Guru’ holds the supreme significance. Most people of India are still ardent of becoming disciples of many saint and heartily follow given guidelines of their Guru.

On such blessed day, people religiously worship Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati, Rishi Vyas, Guru Brihaspati (Jupiter), and other ancient sages. Lord Ganesha governs brainpower, Goddess Saraswati offers Vidhya, and ancient Sage like Rishi Vyas unearths profound knowledge of the Universe. This way with depth of soul, human beings are religiously attached to this paramount day.

Different regions of India celebrate this day with different ways but with the same feeling, and this feeling is the respect or honor which they show towards their Guru. Sikha people consider ‘Guru’ as the most estimable person in their lives, and hence Guru Purnima is very momentous day for them.

Mantra for Guru purnima

Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gurur Devo Maheshwara,
Guru Sakshat Parabrahmah Tasmai Shree Guru Veh Namah ||

Recite this Mantra on Guru Purnima day and make your heart pure and spiritual. To recite this Mantra, wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear new clothes, especially of yellow color. Worship God Ganesha, goddess Saraswati, and Maharishi Ved Vyas. And recite the above given Mantra after remembering your guru.
