According to the Hindu scriptures, Ujjaini has special importance among seven cities or popularly known as Saptapuris. “Ujjaini” means the one that gives victory with elevation. And this city has always proved it to be true. It is believed that Lord Mahakal lives in this great city of Ujjaini.

This is one of the main 12 Shiva Linga or jyothir-linga, but it is unique in its own way as it faces to the south direction. According to the holy Hindu scriptures, the south direction is the place of Yama or the god of death. And it is believed that the ruler of time or Kaal, Mahakala, keeps him under control by facing to the south direction here. It is also widely believed that the one who sees this jyothir-linga once in his lifetime never dies before enjoying the full span of his life.

In the ancient city of Ujjain, the majestic procession of Mahakala can be seen on every Monday of the Hindu month of Shravana. As per the Hindu calendar of Maharashtra, the month start with Shukla Paksha and it ends with Krishna Paksha. While according to the north Indian calendar, the month begins with Krishna Paksha and ends with Shukla Paksha. And this is the reason, the month of Shraavana starts after 15 days than north Indian panchang. In order to reconcile both of these Panchangs, the festivities of Shravana is celebrated for 1 ½ months. So from this point of view, the procession of Mahakala takes place on six Mondays.

As per the north Indian calendar, the festive season of Shravana is celebrated starting with the Krishna Paksha of Shraavana to the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapad. On its last Monday, the royal procession of Mahakala takes place. All the bands and the cultural groups of Ujjain participate in this grand procession. The whole of Ujjain city is decorated for the celebration. Six masks of Mahakaleshwar are included in this celebration that symbolizes his different postures. Saints and priests chant the holy Mantras along with the procession. The groups singing the devotional songs make the entire environment sacred. The chariot of Mahakala is usually situated at the end of the procession. At various places, people worship it and perform Aartis. The procession reaches to the Rama Ghata after moving through various important parts of the city. After the final worship here, it goes back to the temple. Other than the month of Shraavana, on the Monday of Maharashtriyan month of Kartika, Vijayadashmi and Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, this procession takes place too.
