Legend Behind Onam

While celebrating Onam, let's understand the legend associated with this festival. The origin of celebration of Onam relates to king Mahabali. He was an efficient ruler and a great king. His people honored and respected him a lot. They were happy to have Mahabali as their king. Wealth and prosperity bestowed on his kingdom. The Gods or the devas began to envy him. They compared him with Lord Indra and went to Lord Vishnu for his help. Lord Vishnu knew that Mahabali was capable enough to be compared to Lord Indra and he also realized that there can't be two Lords in the universe. So, he decided to send Mahabali in the netherworld. For this, he took the form of Vamana, a dwarf and went to meet Mahabali and asked him for charity.

He agreed even when his Guru, Sukracharya asked him to disagree. Because Shukracharya sensed that the dwarf had some divine power. But, Mahabali did not want to withdraw his promise and so, he asked Vamana to tell whatever he wants as alm. Vamana asked for three steps of land to live in. He agreed, as he thought he was just a dwarf. But, Vamana enlarged his body to such a huge size that with only two steps he reached both to the sky and to the netherworld. Mahabali was afraid that Vamana's third step would destroy the earth. So, he bent his head to let him keep his third step on it, with which Lord Vishnu as Vamana, pushed him to the netherworld.

But, gave him a boon that he could visit every year to the kingdom, he used to rule once with immense dedication. Since then, people of Kerala celebrate Onam every year to celebrate the arrival of their favorite king, Mahabali.
