Other than the traditional New Year, the Tamil people also celebrate the International New Year which is celebrated on the 1st January 2016. This day is also known Puthandu and Chittirai Vishu.

Welcoming the Tamil New Year:

On the auspicious day of Puthandu or the Tamil New Year people wake up early in the morning. They clean their houses and decorate the entrances with Kolam (Rangoli). Kolam is a traditional art in which people decorate the entrance with rice flour. All the members in the family take early bath and worship the Almighty. They thank God for the past year and pray to him for a prosperous New Year. It is believed that starting the day with religious activities brings good luck for the entire year. People visit each other’s houses to wish Happy New Year. They distribute sweets and delicacies on the auspicious day.

Kolams on Puthandu/ Tamil New Year:

Kolams are special designs that are prepared by the women of the family with a paste of Rice and natural color. It is done to decorate the house and make more welcoming for the guests. The centre of the Kolam is decorated with an earthen lamp which is called a Kuthuvillakku.

However, there is yet another reason for preparing these Kolams. On New Year, it is believed that feeding the ants and birds bring luck and prosperity and Kolams are good food for them. It means that we include all living beings in the celebration of Puthandu or the Tamil New Year.

Feasting on the New Year:

The dish is cooked using ingredients such as Jaggery, Neem and raw mangoes. It is a sweet and sour dish which signifies the paradox of happiness and sorrows of life. This also signifies that life is a combination of sweetness and bitterness.

As a part of celebrations, elders of the family distribute gifts and money to the children of the family. It is considered to bring good luck to the younger members of the family. Also, all the members of the family visit their nearby temples and seek the blessings of the divine.

There is a popular custom which is observed on the day of Puthandu or Tamil New Year. The custom is Kanni which means to watch an auspicious sight. It is believed that watching Kanni on this day is considered to be very auspicious and lucky.
