Amavasya July 2011 date is July 1 and July 30. As per a Hindu lunar calendar, Amavasya is a day in a month when moon disappears completely. There is a 30 days cycle, in which moon expands its size to the fullest increasing day by day and then it starts contracting and is reduced to a dark circle. When the moon ceases to appear, that day is called “Amavas ki Raat” in Hindi. Amavasya, as per the Traditional Hindu Calendar is described as the last day of any particular month. The Amavasya will begin at 2:11 PM on June 30, 2011 and will end at 2:02 PM on July 1, 2011. The fast on Amavas or Amavasya Vrat is on June 30. On July 1, Snan, dhyan, Shradh and Tarpan will be performed. The Amavasya time on july 30 is - 1:03 AM to 11:58 PM.

The July 1 Amavasya is of the Ashada month as per the traditional North Indian calendar. It is the Jyeshta Amavasi in other regions. The Amavasya on July 30 is the Shravan Amavasi in North India.  It is the Ashada Amavasi in other regions. In Tamil Calendars these are respectively the Aani Amavasai and Aadi Amavasi.

The darkest day in a traditional Hindu month is Amavasya and is considered both auspicious and inauspicious by different Hindu communities. For instance: Some mythological texts depict Amavasya to be inauspicious to commence any religious or fortunate activity. Jyeshta month ends on July 1 in traditional calendars followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Ashada month on July 30 ends in these regions.

Many Hindus undertake a fast on Amavasi. Some devotees take a single meal on the day. People observe fasts, visit holy places to ward off any unfortunate event.
