Dussehra in 2017 is on 30th of September. Dussehra is a popular Hindu festival takes place on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin. Legend behind Dussehra

The main reason of celebrating this festival is to celebrate the victory of good over evil. There are two main legends behind the celebration of Vijayadashami.

Dussehra and Ramayana

According to this legend, Goddess Sita was abducted by the demon king Ravana. Lord Rama (believed to be the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu), along with his brother, Lakshman and his devotee Hanuman set to Lanka in order to get his wife freed. He was accompanied by a vanara sena. According to the mythology, Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga with full devotion till 9 days. After this only, he was able to reveal the secret of killing Ravana. On the 10th day itself, he was able to win the battle.

Dussehra and Goddess Durga

Mahishasura, with his devotion and prayers, was able to won the favor of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva gave him a boon that no man or deity can kill him. After this, his cruelty exceeded the limits on earth. So, the trinity i.e. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva merged their powers and gave birth to woman warrior, Maa Durga.

Goddess Durga fought with Mahishasura and finally defeated him on the pious day of Dussehra. Durgotsav is mainly celebrated in the Southern parts of India.
