Veer Nirvana Samvat or Jain Panchang is used in Jainism. It is a lunar calendar, which is based on the Nirvana of Lord Mahavir Swami. This Calendar is believed to have started from the Nirvana year of Lord Mahavir Swami (527 BC). 

2026 Jain Calendar: Important Facts

  • The basis of the Jain Calendar is the Nirvana of Lord Mahavir Swami. Therefore, it is called Veer Nirvana Samvat, which started from 527 BC.
  • This calendar is based on lunar months, that is, every month starts according to the lunar position. This makes it very similar to the Hindu calendar. 
  • The date of Paryushan, the biggest festival of Jainism, changes every year as it is determined according to the lunar month.
  • The Jain Calendar gives the dates of both Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight), which helps in calculating the fasts and festivals accurately.
  • Five Kalyanak days hold special importance in the Jain calendar – Garbha, Janma, Diksha, Gyan and Moksha. These dates are celebrated with special prayers and fasts.
  • Veer Nirvana Samvat is approximately 470 years ahead of Vikram Samvat. For example, if Vikram Samvat is 2082, then Veer Nirvana Samvat will be 2552.
  • The purpose of the 2026 Jain Calendar is not just to tell the dates, but it is a Panchang that inspires restraint, penance, sacrifice and self-purification.
