Mithuna Sankranti is also celebrated as Raja Sanktranti. This is usually celebrated all over Orissa. This marks the beginning of the agricultural season and it coincides with the rainy season. The first rain of the monsoon is welcomed as it marks the beginning of the agricultural season.

During this time the farms are left untouched. The farms are allowed to be wetted by the first showers of the monsoon, making them ready for the year’s produce. This is symbolic of giving Mother Earth some rest. A host of festivities and celebrations mark the event. Songs containing the feelings of love, affection, respect and social respect are sung.

Dakshinayana starts with the end of Mithun Sankranti in South India.
