Chaitra Shukla Ashatami has a great significance. The celebration of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada that begins from Chaitra Shukla Ashtami, culminates on the same day or next day (Ramnavami). On this day, the primordial motherly power came into existence. Bhagvati Bhavani Shaktishalini is a great power and that is why this day is called Mahaashatami.
 
The devotees of Bhagvati worship her different incarnations like Durga, Kali, Bhavani, Jagdamba, Navdurga etc. The idols should be bathed into pure water and should be decotrated with new cloths followed by worship according to procedure.
 
The offerings of dhup, kapoor, ghee, gulaal and other materials should be made while performing Havan. A nutmeg (jayafal) covered with cinnabar (sindur) should also be offered. After worshipping Devi with incense and earthen lamps, 101 circumambulation (parikrama) enchanting 'Mateshwari ki Jay' should also be performed. Idol of mother Parvati made up of cow-dunk (gobar) is also worshipped in some areas.
 
Married and unmarried women worship the idol of mother Parvati on this day. The dispersion of Durga is also celebrated on this day. The Devi is worshipped on this day early in the morning. Offering of several sweet dishes should also be made to goddess. Minors should be facilitated with puri, halwa and channa.
