Shiva Shayana Chaturdashi 2017 date is July 8. On this day, it is believed that Lord Shiva goes into meditative sleep (Yoga Nidra) for four months, that’s why this day is known as Shiv Shayan Chaturdasi. The concept of Siva Shayana Chaturdasi is quite similar to Chatur Mas or Chaturmas period related to Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the 14th day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of Ashada month as per Hindu calendar.

Shiva Shayana Vrata is observed like Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat and Shiva Sayan Utsav is celebrated on this day. Shiva Shayan Vrata begins on Ashada Purnima, the day which is also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima or Guru Purnima. According to various Puranas, similar to Lord Vishnu who sleeps on Ksheer Sagar for four months, Lord Shiva also goes into Yoga Nidra or meditative sleep for four months.

During the four pious months of Shiva Shayan Utsav, Lord Shiva destroys sins and evil and establishes virtues and prosperity. The rituals performed during Shiv Sayan Utsav include Shiva Dolotsavam or Shiv Dol Utsav. Reciting Shiva Purana is considered meritorious on this day. The idols of Bhagwan Shiva are swung in a cradle during Shiva Dol Utsav.
