The month of festivity, Savan is round the corner. During the Shravan Maas (month) everyday is an occasion to celebrate. The fifth month of the Hindu calendar is known as Shravan Maas or the month of Sawan. Saavan in 2017 is going to commence on July 10 and will end on August 7 with the festival of Raksha Bandhan.

Sawan : The Significance

Sawan is considered to be one of the most auspicious months in the year. During the month of Saawan, a lot of Hindu festivals are celebrated across the country. Saawan is also known as Avni in Tamil. As per the Hindu mythology, Shravana Nakshatra (constellation) is the birth star of Lord Vishnu, which is observed on the full Moon day (Purnima). Hence, this month is known as Shravana Maas. During the month of Saavn, Kanwar Mela is organised. During this Kanwar Mela, devotees from all across the nation travel to Haridwar, barefooted. They take a dip in the holy water of the river Ganga at Haridwar. Post that, they collect the Gangajal (water of the sacred river, Ganges) and offer it to the Lord Shiva at Neelkanth.

Sawan: Sawan Somvar Vrat

The Somvar or Mondays of Sawan month is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Sawan Somvar Vrat is observed by unmarried females in order to get a good husband. It is believed that by observing Sawan Somvar Vrat, one’s desires are fulfilled and all the dreams come true.

Sawan Somvar Vrat and praying to Lord Shiva, a person can achieve his/ her desired result. So, this year in the month of Sawan, don’t forget to observe the Sawan Somvar Vrat.

Sawan: Mangala Gauri Vrat

The Mangala Gauri fasts are performed on Tuesdays in Shravan Maas. Mangala Gauri Puja is observed by newly married females. It is believed that by performing this Puja, one gets rid of negative omens.

Sawan: Saavn Budhwar Vrat

The Wednesdays during the Sawan month are devoted to Lord Vishnu or Krishna. Hence, they are known as Sawan Budhwar Vrat.

Thursdays or Guruvar in Shravan month is dedicated to Jupiter (Budh Graha). hus, known as Sawan Guruvar Vrat for the Shravan Mas.

Sawan: Saavan Shukrawar Vrat

Shukrawar is dedicated to Lakshmi Devi. On Fridays, married females perform a fast for the well-being and protection of their family. This Sawan Vrat in Hindu mythology is known as Varalakshmi Vrat or Saavan Shukrawar Vrat.

Sawan: Sampat Shaniwar Vrat

Shaniwar or Saturday is dedicated to Shani (Saturn). This Sawan fast is observed by those, who would like to eradicate the complications that are existing in their horoscope (Kundali). This Sawan Vrat is known as Sampat Shaniwar Vrat.

Sawan: Saavan Raviwar Vrat

Sundays of the Sawan month are honored to the Sun God. The fasts performed on these Sundays are popularly known as Sawan Raviwar Vrat.

Sawan: Legend Of Savan

As per the holy scriptures, Samudra Manthan (churning of the milk ocean) took place in the month of Saavan. The month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva, as He acted as the savior of the universe. While churning of the ocean by gods and demons, a lot of things emerged out. Out of which, one of the most deadliest thing was poison Halahala. This poison was swallowed by Lord Shiva, as no one else could do it.

On consuming the poison, Lord Shiva saved the universe from coming to an end. The poison was stopped at his throat by Goddess Parvati, turning his throat blue. Since then, he is worshiped as Neelkanth.

Hence, worshiping Lord Shiva during this month is given an utmost importance. Monday is considered to be the favorite day of Lord Shiva; hence, fasting on Mondays is believed to bring good results for the devotees. Sawan Somvar Vrat : Rituals & Traditions

Married women observed strict austerity through Sawan Somvar Vrat in search for a pleasant domestic life. Unmarried ladies also perform Sawan Somvar Vrat, in order to get married to the ideal man of their lives.

Now, let’s take a look at how the devotees should observe Sawan Somvar Vrat. The rituals of Sawan Somvar Vrat are as follows.

  1. The devotees take a holy dip in the morning and pray to Lord Ganesha during the Sawan Somvar Vrat.
  2. Sawan Somvar Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The offering of Bael leaves (Aegle marmelos), honey, milk, butter, yogurt, and jaggery (all these items are together known as Panchabhutas) is performed to the Linga.
  3. Mantras like Om Namah Shivay and Maha Mrityunjay Mantra are chanted throughout the day.
  4. Wearing Rudraksha and using Rudraksh Mala for Japa or meditation.

  5. Abstain oneself from having normal food items while observing the Sawan Somvar Vrat.
  6. Food items, that should be consumed in the Sawan Vrat, are potato chips, fruits, and Sabudana khichdi (sago hotchpotch).
