To carry out predictions in a birth chart, the first and foremost thing that is to be looked at is the birth chart. The birth chart for an individual is the blue print of the sky at the time of his birth. The placement of planets at the time of birth creates an everlasting impression upon the individual. The effect of these planets will give results to the native at some point of time during the life span of the individual.

The role of the astrologer is to interpret the birth chart and understand the time period during which the effect of a planet takes place. To understand this effect there are various techniques available such as the Dasha System, varga divisions in Vedic astrology and Directions like Primary direction, Secondary direction, Radix methods in western astrology.

The Transits of planet (gochara) is also very important to understand without which the prediction is incomplete. If the birth chart in an individual can be compared to the hour hand of a clock then the dasha systems, directions can be taken an the minute hand of the clock and transits will be seconds hand of the clock. Without understanding the effect of transits the predictions made with regards to when the event will occur will go awry.

The transit chart is nothing but the position of planets at the current place and time. We need to understand that planets move around the sun in a constant motion. Hence their relative position from us will always appear to change. The position of planets for any particular day can be found out from any reliable computer software or panchang. This chart has to be superimposed on the individual’s birth chart to understand the effects.

In vedic astrology the Moon at the time of birth is taken as the reference point and all transit predictions are based with the sign Moon occupies at the time of birth (which is known as janma rashi).

The following positions occupied by the planets in transit gives favorable results. This could give an indication for determining muhurta and achieving success in starting new activities.

Sun – Sun gives favorable results when it occupies 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th position from janma rashi. Sun generally takes a month to cover one sign. Hence the beneficial results could be felt in a minor way. The favorable results would be in areas like finance, good health, success and overall prosperity.

Moon – Moon gives favorable results when it occupies 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th position from janma rashi. Moon covers one sign in 2 ¼ days. Hence the beneficial results could be felt in a very minor way. The favorable results would be felt mostly in the mind like feeling comfortable, happiness, feeling successful, feeling respected, success in career and overall prosperity.

Mercury – Mercury gives favorable results when it occupies 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 11th position from janma rashi. Mercury covers one sign in roughly one month. Hence the results would be minor. The results would be felt in areas like gaining wealth, prosperity in family, success, gains, domestic happiness and wealth.

Venus – Venus gives favorable results when it occupies 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 11th position from janma rashi. Venus covers one sign in roughly 1 month. Hence the beneficial results could be felt in a minor way. The favorable results would be in the felt in the physical senses like pleasures, fortune, wealth, prosperity, fame, luxury and happiness.

Mars – Mars gives favorable results when it occupies 3rd, 6th, 11th position from janma rashi.  Mars covers one sign in roughly 1 ½ to 2 months. Hence the beneficial results could be felt in a minor way. The favorable results would be felt physically like gains, success and authority.

Jupiter – Jupiter gives favorable results when it occupies 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th position from janma rashi. Jupiter covers one sign in roughly one year. Hence the beneficial impact would be long lasting. The favorable results would be felt in domestic life, birth of children, sense of well being, religious and devotional, overall success and happiness.

Saturn – Saturn gives favorable results when it occupies 3rd, 6th, 11th position from janma rashi. Of all the transits considered, Saturn’s transit is given foremost importance in determining the events. Saturn takes roughly 2 ½ years to cover one sign, hence the impact of Saturn’s transit is long lasting and is capable of changing the life of the individual.
