Types of Housewarming Ceremony

According to astrology, the Puja or holy ceremony conducted before moving into any new house is called Griha Pravesh/housewarming ceremony in Hinduism. On the other hand, if we talk about Vastu Shastra, there are three types of housewarming ceremonies :-

  1. Apurva : During this Griha Pravesh ceremony, a person enters a newly constructed house for the first time.
  2. Sapurva : During this Griha Pravesh ceremony, we move into an old house of ours, which we had vacated for a certain period of time.
  3. Dwandwa : In the Dwandwa Griha Pravesh Muhurat, we leave our old house under compulsion because of the occurrence of any trouble or disaster and plan to move into it once again by following all the necessary rites and rituals.

Griha Pravesh Muhurat 2021 : Importance of Shubh Muhurat

Of all the 16 Sanskars which are a part of the Hindu religion and culture, Griha Pravesh happens to be the most prominent one which is why it needs to be commemorated in accordance with a special Muhurat. The calculation of the auspicious Muhurat for Griha Pravesh ceremony should be done while seeking the guidance of an experienced astrologer. In this duration, the astrologer takes note of the auspicious Tithi, Nakshatra and the planetary position and finally comes up with an auspicious Griha Pravesh muhurat.

  • As per the Hindu panchang it is believed that the housewarming Sanskar turns out to be most auspicious if it is commemorated during the months of months of Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakh and Jyestha. However, the Chaturmas which means Ashad, Shravan, Bhadrapad and Ashwin should not be taken into account to commemorate this highly official and religious ceremony. Griha Pravesh Muhurat 2021 : Shubh/Auspicious Lagna

There is a special significance of ‘Lagna’ during the house warming ceremony. Shubh Lagna is supposed to be that special auspicious time, during which performing any ritual according to a designated Muhurat is considered appropriate and auspicious. The Lagna or ascendant of a particular zodiac sign goes on during a particular time, which can be both auspicious and inauspicious for you. In such a situation, there are certain things which should be kept in mind while calculating an auspicious Lagna. Let's have a look at these things: -

  • While calculating the Lagna for Griha Pravesh Muhurat it should be kept in mind that the native’s Lagna should not be the eighth ascendant his/her birth sign.
  • The house owner should enter the house only in the third, sixth, tenth or eleventh and his/her Sthir Lagna from his/her birth / birth date, because entering home at this time always proves to be auspicious.
  • The house ascendant/Griha Lagna is considered auspicious from the first, second, fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth house present in the Griha Lagna and malefic planets in the third, sixth and eleventh houses and also if and during this time the fourth and eighth house remain pure.
  • The position of the Sun from the birth Nakshatra of the native is considered inauspicious when it is in the fifth or ninth house during the Griha Pravesh ceremony, while it is considered to be auspicious to be placed in the eighth or sixth house.

Griha Pravesh Sanskar Shubh Muhurat

According to the textbooks of astrology, the auspicious Mahurats are listed down as - Rudra, Shwet, Mitra, Sarbhat, Savitra, Viraj, Vishvavasu, Abhijit, Rohin, Bal, Vijay, Nairrut, Varuna, Sober and Bhag, all of these are the 15 Muhurats out of which: -

  • The 14th Muhurat on Saturday
  • The 12th Muhurat on Monday
  • The 10th Muhurat on Tuesday
  • The 8th Muhurat on Wednesday
  • The 6th Muhurat on Thursday
  • The 4th Muhurat on Friday and
  • The 2nd Muhurat and all other auspicious activities are asked to be avoided on Saturday.

House Warming Ceremony 2021: Importance of Vastu Puja and Vastu Shanti

During the Griha Pravesh or house warming ceremony, a Pooja dedicated to the Vastu Devta for the prosperity and success of the household is also commemorated to make the household free from any kind of Vastu Dosha. Even before the Griha Pravesh ceremony begins, the Vastu Pooja is commemorated by duly following all the rights and rituals full stop some special things are to be kept in mind during the Vastu Pooja which are mentioned below:-

  • While worshiping the Vastu Devata and before the house warming ceremony, fill A pure water in a vase of copper / clay, put nine different types of grains and a coin of one rupee in it and place it on the main door.
  • In order to negate or eliminate all kinds of Vastu Doshas, you should seek the guidance of an experienced Vastu expert and then conduct a Yagya. It is believed that the commemoration of such a Yagya removes all kinds of negativity and brings in happiness and prosperity to the household.
  • During the Vastu Pooja one should also install the Vastu Yantra at their new house by following all the necessary rituals. This helps the natives to please the Vastu Devta who showers their blessings upon them and helps the household to grow and earn prosperity in the future.

House Warming Ceremony 2021: Things to be Kept in Mind

As you all have already known by now, the calculation of the Gruh Pravesh Muhurat and the necessary Puja rituals should be officiated by an astrological expert. However there are certain things in accordance with the Hindu culture and religion which should be kept in mind by the native. Some of the important ones are mentioned below.

  • During the house warming ceremony, the main door of the house should be decorated with flowers. Also, if possible, a Rangoli should also be made at the main entrance.
  • After filling Gangajal or purified water in a Copper vessel, put eight leaves of Mango or Ashoka Tree and place a coconut in the middle of it.
  • Later on, vermilion should be used to draw a Swastika on the coconut or the vessel respectively and a Roli should be tied to it.
  • Once the Griha Pravesh rituals are complete, the Copper vessel should be carried and the whole family should enter the new house in broad daylight.
  • The eldest man and woman of the house should exclusively enter the house with the five pure items listed down by the Hindu religion and culture such as: coconut, turmeric, jaggery, rice and milk.
  • While entering the house, first of all men enter their new house only by extending their right leg and woman their left leg.
  • On the day of the housewarming ceremony, an idol of Lord Ganesha, Dakshinavarti Shankh and Shri Yantra should be installed in the house.
  • Offer the Mangal Kalash brought with you to Lord Ganesha at the sanctorum of the house while offering your reverence to the Lord.
  • Next, offer your prayers to the kitchen as well and make a Swastika symbol there on the wall while lighting a lamp.
  • First and foremost, perform your first activity at your new house in the kitchen. Boil some milk and make some sweets, which should be later offered to the Lord.
  • After offering food/Bhog to God, distribute the remaining food to cows, crows, dogs, ants, etc., as Prasad.
  • Lastly, provide food to a priest or a Brahmin and a poor person, and give them alms and clothes and also take their blessings.

It is believed that the complete commemoration of this ceremony by duly following all the rites and rituals brings in happiness, peace and prosperity to the household.

Things to be kept in mind during the House Warming Ceremony!

Many times the Griha Pravesh is conducted while the construction of the building goes on or before its completion, which is considered to be very inauspicious in Hinduism. In such a situation, we should always carry out the rites and rituals asked by the principles of astrology during the house warming ceremony, it is necessary to follow certain rules. Let us know which things we should avoid during this time: -

  • Housewarming should not be completed unless and until the main door of your house is installed and the roof gets laid.
  • Prayers should also be offered to the Vastu Devta/Lord in accordance with the rites and rituals, otherwise Vaastu Dosha gets created.
  • It is believed that the main door of the house should not be locked once the Griha Pravesh ceremony is conducted. Otherwise, Lords and Goddesses do not get a chance to visit the house.
