The 9th day of the Dasara Navaratri is celebrated as Maha Navami. The term Maha means great and powerful, Navami means the 9th one. This auspicious day is celebrated because Goddess Durga or Maha Sakthi took the form of Mahishasura Mardhini and destroyed the evil force of Mahishasura to restore peace in the three lokas. This year Maha Navami will be celebrated on 16th October.

This day has a very in-depth occult significance for all the Saktheyas in Hinduism. Vaishnavas who are the followers of Lord Maha Vishnu also attach importance to these days and perform special rituals. In Tirumala Brahmotsavas are celebrated for “Balaji”. It is said that on Dasara (the 10th one) lord Rama killed Ravana. Hence these parva dinas has equal significance to both Saktheyas and Vaishnavas. This is the beauty of Hinduism which gives a very less scope for divergence between any two sects.

Various practices are observed on this day over different parts of India. In some northern states and in some western parts of India a puja named “Kanya Puja” is performed, nine virgins (symbolic representations of Nava Durgas) will be offered puja on this occasion. The Shodasopachara Puja will be performed to them. In south India Suhasini Puja is followed. A married woman (representation for Maha Sakthi) will be offered Shodasopachara Puja. Dasamahavidya followers will worship “Matangi” on this day. Navadurga sampradaya followers will worship “Sidhidhathri”on this day.

Whatever may be the tradition all over India Maha Sakthi will be worshiped on this significant day.

Mythology:

According to some scriptures that once when a demon named Mahishasura threatened all the three lokas. Even lord Vishnu and Siva can’t control him as he has a boon that another Mahishasura will be born for every drop of blood fallen on the earth. Lord Siva instructed all the devtas to transfer their female powers into a fire and a very powerful feminine force named Maha Sakthi emerged from that fire.

She with all the destructive power with her took the form of Bhadra Kali and killed Mahishasura on a fierce battle. She is called as Mahishasuramardhini (destroyer of Mahishasura) on that day and worshiped accordingly. She is very furious and combative on this day. To reduce her fiery temperament the on last day she will be worshiped as a savior and divine mother Rajarajeswari who is very pleasant and forgiving.

The celebrated Jagadguru Sri Sankaracharya wrote the Mahishasuramardhini stotra which is a beauty as far as poetry and devotion is concerned. The style of expression and the flow of the stotra is awesome and one should really enjoy by reading it.

Astrology:

Astrologically people can follow my previous article on Durgashtami in this esteemed website. People suffering from enemies, Drishtidoshas, law suits. Family problems and failure in competitions can worship this Goddess on this auspicious day. All doshas relating to Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Moon can be mitigated to a great extent by worshipping her.

Other remedies which can cause early marriage, control wavering of mind, causing progeny etc. is to offer feast to Brahmins (atleast five) or Suhasini (a sumangali or married woman mostly a brahmin), Kanya (virgin who is between 15 and 18 years). Before offering feast their feet are to be washed and that water should be sprinkled on head (on the head of person who is offering feast). Later after offering feast clothes and other gifts along with Dakshina (in case of Brahmins), flowers, eyetex, kumkum etc. (in case of others) to their satisfaction and seek blessings by stretching before them.

By performing these remedies one will find solutions to their problems with the blessings of that Divine Mother.

Let us all pray Maa Mahasakthi to bless all of us with peace and prosperity.

Jai Maa Bhavani
