Parsava Ekadashi which is also known as Parivartini, Vamana and Jayanti Ekadashi is observed during the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Bhadrapada i.e. August and September. This year the date of Parsva Parivartini Ekadasi is on September 8. It is important to note that ‘Parivartini’ means ‘of change’ and denotes a time when Shesh-Shayi Narayan (form of God laying on the serpent Shesh) changes his position, posture, direction and faces the East. One must note that this Ekadasi happens during the Dakshinayana Punyakalam. It is interesting to note the famous age old belief that Lord Vishnu who takes rest during this period changes his posture of sleep namely he turns from left side to right side. It is because of this reason that this Ekadashi is also known as Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi.

As a matter of practice Vamana Avatar of Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this Ekadashi day. The reason as to why this Ekadasi is also known as Vamana Ekadashi is simply because Vamana Avatar took place during this period. As a matter of fact King Mahabali was sent to pathalam on this day and therefore the Onam festival which celebrates the return of Mahabali takes place during this period.

Historical literature reveals that the importance and relevance of this Ekadasi was narrated to Yudhisthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, by Lord Krishna. Yudhisthira was inquisitive regarding the history, relevance and purport of the Ekadashi and wanted Lord Krishna to enlighten him. In reply to the queries he was informed that Ekadashi bestows both great merit and ultimate liberation from material bondage and that if one truly desires salvation from the material world he should fast on Vamana Ekadashi.

It is believed that those who observe this Ekadashi will be absolved of their sins. As per the religious calendar this Ekadashi also happens during the Chaturmas period. As a matter of practice those who undertake fast on this day avoid grains and rice.Practically while observing this holy fast a Vaishnava should lovingly worship the Supreme Lord in his form as Vamanadeva i.e. the dwarf incarnation, whose eyes are like lotus petals.

It is believed that by doing so he worships all other deities as well, including Bramha, Vishnu and Shiva. If possible on this day one should give a qualified person some yogurt mixed with rice, as well as some silver, and then remain awake throughout the night. By following and observing this simple religious procedure one will free oneself of material conditioning. It is said that one who observes this sacred Parivartini Ekadashi in the ideal way prescribed will surely attain all kinds of happiness in this world and will be free from all sins. Historically Ekadashi is mentioned in a number of Puranas. It is associated with Lord Vishnu and ‘Haribhakti Vilas’ states in great detail the finer points related to it.

How to observe Ekadashi

Harivasara explains in detail the entire procedure regarding observance of ‘Ekadashi’. Though during the modern day period it is difficult to follow and observe the same in strict sense but there are people with deep religious inclination who still manage to do it. Depending upon the region people have given diverse opinions on how to go about it and regarding food and other rituals. It varies from region to region and from person to person.

One must note that the preparation starts on Dasami day which is a day before Ekadashi. As a matter of religious practice the person observing Ekadashi has to wake up early in the morning and has to perform the necessary routine activities while doing which he should be mentally prepared for Ekadashi. Further on the day of dasami he should consume meal only at one time and should compulsorily avoid salt, alcohol, non-vegetarian food and sex. There is also some puranic literature which suggest that dal and honey should further be avoided on this day.

After dasami the day which follows is Ekadashi which is meant for complete fasting. It is believed that offering prayers to Vishnu is the order of the day which should be followed in strict sense. There are also varied opinions on the routine activities which are to be performed like some people avoid sleep during Ekadashi night and they hear religious discourses and perform Arati however others simply observe fast and confine themselves to normal worship.
The next day is called Dwadasi that is the day after Ekadeshi on which day the routine and activities of Dasami are more or less repeated and followed. It is believed that observants should stick to normal eating habits and avoid overeating and further ensure that the food cooked is entirely home made. Puranas further state that as a mode of precaution one should not take pride while observing Ekadashi.

It is further significant to note that fasting even otherwise keeps the system clean and drains out the negative energy from within. Going on fast once in a while helps in the overall development of human body. It is reiterated that the eleventh day of each lunar month is called ekadashi and the fasting on this date does not refer just to food but also restrictions on the five senses, their organs and also the mind of the observants. The day of Parivartini Ekadasi is also traditionally celebrated, by placing Bhagwan in a wooden boat and floating him on water. It makes one remember the time when Krishna Bhagwan took the gopis of the village on a boat ride across the sacred River Yamuna.
