The Religious Significance of Sawan Somvar Vrat

Saavn in India is more like a month long celebration which includes fasting, worshipping and other festivities. Though the entire month of Sawan is important, the Sawan Somvar days have a special place in Hinduism. It is very necessary that we all know the significance of Sawan Somvar. Somvar is the day which is specifically dedicated to Lord Shiva. As per the scriptures, the fasting on Mondays gets you the spouse of your choice. Not only that, Somvar Vrat also ensures that your relationship retains all its sweetness and love even after years of living together. In other words it can be said that it is a way to fall in love and stay in that love forever. Devotees see the pure and eternal Shiva-Shakti bond as an inspiration for their relationship. Sawan Somvar also blesses devotees with blissful life. Here, if we do not understand the relation of Lord Shiva, then the purpose will not be fulfilled.

The entire month of Sawan, especially the Sawan Somvar fasts are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva stands for paradoxes. He is one yet many at the same time; He is everywhere yet nowhere; He is calm, and He is the rage too. He is destruction and the creation after it too. There are no words that can truly describe Shiva, the warrior and a lover too. Each one of us has a right to describe Him in innumerable ways and none of it would be wrong. Lord Shiva is sans prejudice and very compassionate to the entire living kind.

Now, that we have understood the immense significance that Sawan Somvar holds, it is naturally the next step to understand how these days are to be observed. To observe a fast on Sawan Somvar, devotees should wake up early in the morning and cleanse their bodies as well as their mind. After that Shiva Aarti should be sung. Shiva Lingam should be worshipped with Bel Patra, camphor, curd, milk and sweet water. Fruits and Prasadam is also offered to the deity of Lord Shiva. Refraining from food, devotees should concentrate and connect to Him. This is not to say that you should refrain from duties that are assigned to you. However, while you go about delivering your worldly tasks, from deep within, you should be in deep meditation. The thought of Lord Shiva should be prominent. The evening Puja should be performed and fast should be completed with a Satvik meal (vegetarian food). The process to observe Shravan Somvar should be holistic.

Spiritual Importance of Sawan Somvar Vrat

The importance of this fast lies in the fact that it is done to connect with Lord Shiva so that He is able to hear us. It is also done to get rid of the evil in us. While journeying through the uneven roads of life, we often forget the truth and purity that lies within. Fasts are a way to go back to that real self. More than anything else they are constant reminders which tell us to be on the right track of life. They do not let us deviate from the path of truth. Also, Somvar fasts are an excellent way to be heard in all the chaos around. Not only do we hear the divine voice of Lord Shiva, but also the voice that lies within us but is rarely heard. The whole process of Savan Somvar fast is done to from a direct connection, so that you present what you desire for, in front of Lord Shiva.
