Annaprashan Dates in 2020: What Is Annaprashan Sanskar?

Annaprashan is one of the 16 samskaras of Hinduism. In this Sanskar, a baby is fed anna (food/grains) for the first time after a continuous milk-diet. As we all know, food (anna) is an essential part of our life. Not only does it give us energy, but it is also not possible for us to live without food and water. A newborn child has to depend on their mother’s milk. However, as they grow, they start eating solid food, and Hinduism celebrates their first morsel through the Annaprashan Sanskar. Typically, this celebration occurs six months after the baby’s birth.

The word Annaprashan is a combination of two Sanskrit words: Anna, meaning food or grains and Prashan, i.e., process. This ritual has various names throughout India, like Mukhebhaat in West Bengal, Choroonu in Kerala, and Bhaatkhulai in Uttarakhand, and so on.

Annaprashan Muhurat 2020: Why Annaprashan Sanskar?

Through the update of Annaprashan Muhurat 2020 we would like to explain about the importance of Annaprashan Sanskar. The 16 samskaras of Hinduism, all have a particular meaning behind it – religious, spiritual, as well as logical. Talking about the Annaprashan Sanskar, there are several rational reasons behind it too. The idea behind this celebration is good health and proper nutrition of the child. Shastras say that when a baby is still in their mother’s womb, sometimes polluted food particles can enter their body. On the flip side, Annaprashan Sanskar ensures that the child eats pure food. Through this, the baby becomes strong and majestic. Six months after their birth, the baby starts teething, and their digestive system also strengthens. Hence, when we start feeding anna to the child, their body, heart, and mind develop.

Annaprashan Muhurat 2020: Why Muhurat is important?

An age-old Hindu tradition is to calculate a Shubh Muhurat to begin any auspicious task. The computation includes a time, day, date, planetary positions, and nakshatras to come to a time best suited for the function. Beliefs say that commencing significant jobs under the right muhurat brings success in the same. In the same manner, as Annaprashan Sanskar is an auspicious occasion, hence the need for the above list of Annaprashan Muhurat 2020.

By Annaprashan Muhurat, we mean the auspicious time during which one can conduct the Annaprashan Sanskar of a child. The calculation of the same depends on the Vedic Panchang, which is why one usually either consults or asks astrologers and wise priests to do this Sanskar. Simultaneously, some people also do the Annaprashan Sanskar according to the traditions of their clan.

Calculating the Annaprashan Muhurat 2020

Whenever we have to decide on a Shubh muhurat, one has to consult the Panchang for it. However, for the Annaprashan Muhurat (2020), we first have to read the child’s kundali. Taking into account the planetary positions and the nakshatras, one should also remember the following points while deciding the Muhurat for Annaprashan:

  • The days Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are considered auspicious for the Annaprashan Muhurat.
  • Out of the two Pakshas (Shukla and Krishna), Shukla Paksha is promising.
  • However, you can also determine the Annaprashan Muhurat during the Pratipada, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, and Dashami Tithis of the Krishna Paksha (first, third, fifth, seventh, and tenth dates respectively).
  • The lagna of Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Aquarius are the best for Annaprashan Sanskar.
  • The eighth and ninth day of Navratri (Ashtami and Navami) are also auspicious timings for Annaprashan Muhurat.
  • The Annaprashan Sanskar should not be done under the nakshatra in which the baby was born, as well as during Amavasya (New Moon), or an eclipse.

And, on the same pattern we calculated Annaprashan Muhurat 2020.

Annaprashan Muhurat 2020: Rules of Annaprashan Sanskar

The provisions of the Annaprashan Sanskar vary according to the gender of the baby – boy or girl. If the baby is a boy, then the Annaprashan Muhurat should be in the 6th or 8th months since his birth, whereas, for a girl, it should be 5th or 7th month. The baby is fed the dish of Kheer (sweet rice porridge), and the entire Sanskar follows the complete rituals and is commemorated at one’s home or a temple. These rules need to be followed for Annaprashan Muhurat 2020 too.

Rituals For Sanskar in Annaprashan Muhurat 2020

  • Begin with giving a bath to the baby.
  • Dress them up in new clothes next.
  • Organize a Havan-Yagya wherever the Sanskar will be held (home/temple).
  • Worship God or your Kul Devi/Devta in an auspicious muhurat and offer Kheer to them first.
  • Now feed the kheer to the baby from a silver utensil.
  • During the Annaprashan, the baby’s face should be in the South direction.
  • The elders of the family should feed the Kheer to the baby and bless him/her.
  • After the Annaprashan Sanskar, keep books, gems, pen (kalam), soil, and such things in a silver utensil in front of the baby. According to this ritual, the baby will pick one thing out of all the items present in front of them. This thing will be where they build their career/business in, in the future.
