Indian Calendar 2021 : Origin and Significance

The Indian Calendar is also known as the Shalivahana Shaka Calendar. The Saka Calendar is not just any other calendar, but is also an epitome of some specific Indian cultures, beliefs and traditions. When it is said to be the national calendar, we offer a tribute to all of our ancient heritage and culture. Many of you would be surprised to know that this particular Indian Calendar 2021 will also be followed by the Hindu population residing in foreign countries like in Indonesia, Bali, Java and many such Southeast Asian countries.

It was after a research conducted by the Calendar Reform Committee during the 1950s, the conclusion was arrived that around 30 different kinds of calendars were put to use to decide upon Hindu,Jain and Buddhist festivals and events.

The research stated that these calendars had their basis on very congruent practices, even though they are based on ancient systems of traditions and astronomy.

  • So as to provide documents, timetables, communication via Saka Calendar dates, this is put to use by the govt of India.

  • The Calendar Reform Committee officially adopted the Indian calendar in 1957 and given a significant status as a part of the Nautical Almanac and also the Indian Ephemeris. It was the first prime minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru who stated the need for an unified calendar.

  • It was also made a prerogative to make this calendar relatable, precise and free of any kind of religious as well as regional conflict, easy to navigate. Hence, ultimately the committee came up with the Saka Calendar, which was made official on March 22, 1957 or Chaitra 1, 1879.

Some famous examples are Gregorian, French, Roman calendars and Indian Solar Calendars which are extensively used in the Indian states of Bengal, Assam, Haryana, Kerala, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Tripura.
