There are some undesirable elements from the past lives that are carried along with the body of a newborn child. Also, the hair formed inside the womb of the mother while the foetus is developing are considered to be impure in nature. Therefore, it is a tradition to remove the hair from the child's head in order to remove the impurities and get rid of bad debts and evil deeds of the past lives. This process is known as Mundan Sanskar.

When and where should Mundan ceremony be performed?

Mundan is performed before the child turns 5 years old. Some people believe that the phrase “The sooner, the better”, stands true for performing Mundan Sanskar. Mostly, Mundan is preferred to be carried out in odd ages rather than in even ages. It is performed for boys as well as for girls. However, there are some families that only perform mundan ceremony for boys and not for girls.

  • Nakshatra: These are the 27 constellation, the position of which helps in determining the Muhurat.
