Solar Eclipse 2020 From An Astrological Perspective

According to astrological calculations, the first Solar Eclipse of 2020 will occur in the zodiac sign Taurus and Mrigashira nakshatra. On the other hand, the second Solar Eclipse will fall in the zodiac sign Scorpio and Jyeshta nakshatra. In such a scenario, the zodiac signs and nakshatras in which the Solar Eclipse will occur, natives of those will be directly affected by the event. Additionally, its diverse effects will be visible on the natives of the various signs as well.

Vedic Astrology denotes the Sun as being the significator of soul, father, and king. This is why it is considered to be the head of the planets. Furthermore, it is also said to be responsible for the attainment of high official posts in government jobs. Sun is the Lord of the zodiac sign Leo, while it remains exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra.

The Sun From An Astrological Point Of View

The Sun is the reason why there are day and night on Earth. It is the creator of seasons in our world. Astrology suggests that the Sun spends approximately one month in a zodiac sign. Its transit from one sign to another causes the event called Solar Month.

Moreover, this transit of the Sun is also called Sankranti. In the same vein, when the Sun enters the zodiac sign Capricorn (Makar), it is called Makar Sankranti. This event is widely celebrated throughout India and is a significant festival of the Hindu culture.

The planet, nearest to the Sun is Mercury. The conjunction of the Sun with Mercury in a kundali is called the Budhaditya Yoga. This yoga is responsible for a sharp mind of the native, and they occupy a high position in government service.

Even though Saturn is the son of Lord Sun, however, they are inimical planets and maintain enmity with each other. Similarly, Venus is Sun’s enemy planet as well. On the flip side, Moon, Mars, and Jupiter are its friendly planets. It is essential to know that any Graha is stronger with its friendly planets and weaker when posited with its enemy planets.

The Sun & Panchang

Hindu Panchang, also called Vedic Panchang, is also calculated on the basis of the Sun. The panchang is made up of its five parts, namely; date, Nakshatra, Karan, vaar (day), and yoga. Thus, the 'date' part of the panchang is considered to be the period between one sunrise and the other.

Why Solar Eclipse Occurs?

As mentioned earlier, the Solar Eclipse is an astronomical event. It occurs when the three celestial bodies (also called planets in astrology), Sun, Moon, and Earth falls in a straight line while moving in their revolutionary orbit. When the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun, it blankets the Sun. As a result, the Sun’s rays are unable to reach the Earth’s surface directly and thus; the Moon obstructs its view. When the latter covers the former completely, it is called a Total Solar Eclipse. Whereas when the Moon hides only parts of the Sun, then it is called a Partial Solar Eclipse. As evident from the paragraph above, this event occurs because of the Moon’s shadow falling on the Earth, and the celestial body itself, obstructing the Sun’s rays. However, when it is seen from the Earth, it looks like the Moon is blanketing the Sun, or even gobbling it up.

Solar Eclipse & Mythology

Astrology suggests that the eclipse occurs due to Rahu and Ketu – the head and body of a demon, called Swarbhanu initially.

As per mythology, during the Samundra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean) between Lords and Demons, Amrit (Nectar of Immortality) came out of the Kshirasāgara (Ocean of Milk). In the fight that ensued over it, the Asuras snatched the Amrit from the Devas. To stop the destruction of the world, Lord Vishnu took the avatar of the gorgeous apsara Mohini. He enthralled the demons, and they agreed to share the Amrit with the Devas. However, Mohini, very cunningly gave the Amrit only to Devas while the drink that the Asuras were offered was wine.

When Swarbhanu recognised this deceit, he sat down with the Devas to get a drink of the Nectar of Immortality. Just as he was about to drink, he was identified by Surya Deva and Chandra Deva. As they pointed him out to Lord Vishnu in Mohini avatar, he beheaded the demon with his Sudarshan Chakra. However, by then, Swarbhanu had already taken a sip of Amrit. Now, even though his body was cut in two, both parts became immortal.

After this, the head of the demon was called Rahu, and the body, Ketu. They were also given the position of shadow planets in the celestial sphere. From then on, it is believed that Rahu and Ketu, to take revenge on the Sun and the Moon, curse the planets. This curse is visible to all, in the form of an eclipse.
